Was Nobody Saves the World Worth It?

Sometimes it takes a literal nobody to save the world! Was Nobody Saves the World worth it?

Background

This is a top-down action RPG with a pretty simple premise: you (Nobody) saves the world. There’s a fair bit of exploration, but The influences are pretty obvious, but if I had to narrow it down to a few, I’d say Costume Quest, Citizens of Earth/Space, and of course Earthbound. This is a quirky game chock full of shout-outs and memes, in case your tolerance for that kind of humor is low. Even the main character’s moniker (Nobody) is a reference, with the phrase nemo perfectus est proudly displayed when you achieve S rank.

What does Nobody Saves the World do well?

The game looks and runs well on the Switch. The combat is hectic but responsive. The soundtrack is great, too.

You take different forms throughout the game: a mouse, a guard, a magician, etc. Different forms have clear advantages in certain situations. They’re all usable, though some are more for flavor. Generally the forms start out a bit underwhelming when you first unlock them, but as you raise their rank their niche becomes readily apparent.

As you play, you’ll find yourself gravitating to certain forms, and you’ll get a lot of customization options. The game further rewards and incentivizes experimentation with quests that make you combine the abilities of different forms. This is eventually necessary to break certain enemy barriers in themed dungeons.

There are multiple upgrade systems in play, and gaining the experience to upgrade forms and level up generally isn’t obtained from simply killing enemies. You can level up overall, which affects your base stats, and you can level up individual forms. Leveling the forms is important because it not only allows for more customization and abilities, but also unlocks more forms further down the flowchart. The game drip feeds form progression as you complete certain milestones, so you have a reason to return to earlier forms to complete new quests.

What could Nobody Saves the World do better?

Some of the minigames are a bit tedious. They’re geared more as puzzles where it’s generally build dependent, but sometimes the execution is a bit flawed. For example, the golf game doesn’t let you bounce the ball (egg) off the walls, which means that you’ll get a few moves in and then be stuck.

I guess great minds think alike, because on multiple occasions I had thrown together custom form combos that the game would later give me as a quest. However, given the reliance on quests to unlock form abilities, I would have preferred that retroactive quest completion had been a thing.

Was Nobody Saves the World fun?

I had a stellar time with this title, and looked forward to working it into the rotation between other games.

Is Nobody Saves the World good value?

The numbers above are misleading. If you do quests and dungeons, it’s easy to rack up the playtime in excess of 30 hours. I’ll admit that 24.99 might seem a bit steep, but this is a cut above the glut of indie ARPGs out there, and the price is reasonable. Personally, I got it with the DLC for about $16 on the eShop.

If you’re on the fence about spending that much on a digital title, this game seems like a good candidate for a physical release. The Guacamelee! games got a print run, so there’s a fair chance that this could get a release through Limited Run Games or a similar company.

Who is this game for?

This is for fans of quirky brawlers who like interesting upgrade systems and variety. There’s a lot to do in this game and it rewards trying new setups and system mastery.

Was Nobody Saves the World worth it?

Saying this game is worth it is an understatement. This game is a must-play. Nobody Saves the World is worth it.
