The Gundam Timeline as of 2021

The Gundam franchise has been around for over 40 years, and who knows, it might be around long after we’re gone. It can be hard to keep track of where all the different series slot into the overall timeline, but don’t worry, I’ve tried to make it as clear as possible. Here’s the Gundam timeline as of 2021.

How to read the timeline

This is an updated timeline (as of June 2021) of animated works, with the exception of G-Savior, which is technically CGI.

I know it looks big, so here’s a rundown. Each timeline is its own color. For example, all of the Universal Century series on the left are the same color. If there are multiple entries in a timeline, they are listed in order.

The alternate universes on the right are not connected (except in the grand sense that all Gundam ends up at Turn A/G-Reco), so feel free to check those out in any particular order.

What about the arrow?

All of the Gundam series eventually lead to Turn A Gundam and G-Reco. The reason they’re at the same point on the timeline is because there’s conflicting information as to which one happens first. Realistically, it doesn’t really matter. Just know that they’re at the very end of the line. All roads lead to Turn A.

What about Build Fighters/SD Gundam?

Build Fighters and the other Gunpla battling shows clearly exist outside of the timeline. As for SD Gundam, the intrinsic conceit of the concept implies that it makes more sense if they’re kept separate.

What about stuff that’s not on there?

There are a few things I didn’t include. Build Real didn’t make the timeline as (1) it’s still airing and (2) I don’t have enough concrete info to place it on or off the timeline. It’s also complete trash.

Gundam Neo Experience 0087: Green Divers and Gundam the Ride didn’t make it onto the list because you can no longer experience them. While I’m sure they’re out on the internet somewhere in a digital format, they aren’t crucial.

Gundam-san is a parody show. It’s not required viewing by any means.

Gundam Evolve showcases characters and suits from a lot of different series, so it’s not really feasible to put it on the timeline unless I were to list each 3-5 minute episode separately.

Gundam vs Hello Kitty may or may not be canon, but as far as I’m concerned it doesn’t have any bearing on the overall storylines. Sorry, Sanrio fans.

Gundam UC: One of Seventy Two is a prequel that establishes the premise for Gundam Narrative. You can find the script online, but this was another work that wasn’t distributed.

I omitted the Gundam Seed Astray promotional videos because they’re just too short to really be considered an entry. At 5 minutes of run time, they’re closer to an extended movie trailer.
