Background
SD Gundam Battle Alliance is a third person action rpg/brawler. Think of it as a pared down version of the Dynasty Warriors Gundam games. It’s fundamentally a 3v3, though your allies don’t do much other than tank some incidental damage. Each stage is a reference to notable battles throughout the Gundam series,
What does SD Gundam Battle Alliance do well?
The selection of suits is pretty good, and there are some great inclusions in both the base game and the DLC. It’s exciting to see suits like the Phoenix, Exia Repair IV, or Moon Gundam.
Another good idea from the devs was the suit selection. If they were available from the start, you’d probably use the most iconic protagonist or villain suits: Nu, Sazabi, Strike Freedom, etc. Instead, many of these suits are later unlocks. I never would have figured that my main suits would be Seravee>Hyaku Shiki>Phoenix, so a lot of credit to the devs for steering you towards different units. It also makes unlocking some of those suits feel more impactful later.
What could SD Gundam Battle Alliance do better?
To no one’s surprise, the AI is sorely lacking. AI partners are mostly just there to occasionally take aggro. Don’t actually expect them to revive you or be useful.
There’s a dire lack of cash flow in this game, though the patch notes would suggest that this has been fixed. Parts sell for more, and overall drops have been buffed greatly.
The loot system is lacking
SD Gundam Battle Alliance solely needs a “blacksmith” type feature where you can upgrade the loot drops you get. Over 95% of drops are vendor trash, and it would have been nice to be able to tinker with the stats, especially when certain drops are rare. Did you sell the auto guard parts from the beginning of the game? Well, you aren’t going to see that part effect drop until endgame.
Fortunately, a recent patch added the ability to sell drops right after battle, which helps reduce the time spent scrolling the shop menu.
Was SD Gundam Battle Alliance fun?
I thoroughly enjoyed it. Full disclosure, I’m obviously a huge Gundam fan.
Is SD Gundam Battle Alliance good value?
There is a lot of replay value here. I also bought the DLC, which has some exciting suits, notably the Exia Repair IV and Moon Gundam. The higher difficulty missions are a good challenge, and there are plenty of suits to unlock.
Who is this game for?
Gundam fans that have felt slighted since the trash fire that was New Gundam Breaker finally have an action title that isn’t a gacha. Action fans who aren’t into the franchise will likely find this impenetrable, though.
Was SD Gundam Battle Alliance worth it?
If you’re a Gundam fan, then SD Gundam Battle Alliance is worth it. I’m not sure that the game has enough to offer casual action fans, though.
