Ponder your humanity (or lack thereof) in this mechanical action rpg crossover narrative. Was Crymachina worth it?

Full disclosure: We received a review code for the Nintendo Switch version of this game. Rest assured that this will not affect the quality or candor of our review.

Background

Humanity is gone and robots are trying to bring it back, but there’s a lot they don’t know about humanity (and themselves) that they discover along the way. You may have heard this one before. Enter some dungeons as some robot girls, defeat bosses, rinse, repeat. This is another game that blends the combat with VN elements, but that’s gotten so common that I’m not sure it bears mentioning.

What does Crymachina do well?

Performance on the Switch was fine, and I didn’t experience any crashes.

What could Crymachina do better?

While it is functional, combat is basic, and the lack of variety gets dull. Get used to these hallways, because you’re going to be seeing a lot of them when you redo levels for experience. Characters were largely uninteresting to me (and silly, honestly) and the story didn’t quite have the chops to tell the narrative it was striving for.

Is Crymachina fun?

If you’re here for the story then you’ll get more bang for your buck, the combat is largely a “turn your brain off” affair.

Is Crymachina good value?

This isn’t a long game, which is probably for the best considering the repetition.

Who is this game for?

This game is in the same tier as titles like Dusk Diver or Neptunia. If you’ fall in love with the characters ‘re the type to forgive a game’s flaws because you fall in love with the characters then this is for you. Crystar fans may get more mileage out of this one.

Was Crymachina worth it?

Ambition is great, but this feels like a budget Nier Automata, which might be exciting for some folks to see. If you like AA games and can tolerate some of the lack of polish then this might be for you, but I would pick it up on sale.
