Background
If you’ve looked at Nintendo games in a physical storefront, then you may have seen this title some time in the last decade. Hyrule Warriors originally launched on the WiiU, got a 3DS port, and then made its way to the Switch. I’ve played and beaten all the versions, but this review is specifically covering the Definitive Edition on the Switch.
It’s a standard musou game with a Zelda skin, so no surprises. There’s a ton of fanservice, and so much content it’s almost overwhelming. There’s a basic story and plenty of collectibles, but you’ll find yourself spending most of your time in the side modes completing maps to unlock characters, weapon tiers, and costumes.
What does Hyrule Warriors do well?
No boring movesets here; every character is fun to play and feels unique. It’s easy to prioritize only playing as Link, but Hyrule Warriors also does a great job of giving you reasons to try other characters. I’m glad it did, because some of the side characters are an absolute treat to play. KT shows up again in the music department, and the rock remixes of classic Zelda themes make for great company on the battlefield.
What could Hyrule Warriors do better?
I like the multiple upgrade tracks, but if you ever stop playing the game then they’re going to feel borderline impenetrable if you try to pick up where you left off.
Is Hyrule Warriors fun?
This is one of the best showcases of the musou format, and it’s a shame that Koei Tecmo doesn’t put out more games on this level.
Is Hyrule Warriors good value?
There is an incredible amount of content here. I can attest with absolute certainty that you will burn out long before approaching anywhere near 100%. Since it has the Legend of Zelda branding, it has held its value, but you can find used copies easily or cop it on sale.
Who is this game for?
This game is for all musou fans. You don’t need any Zelda knowledge to play and enjoy this game.
Is Hyrule Warriors worth playing in 2023?
Musou fans will enjoy the huge variety of movesets, and Zelda fans will appreciate the fanservice. There’s obviously a lot of repetition inherent to the gameplay loop, but I assume you know that going in. I would argue that the only real downside to playing Hyrule Warriors is that you’ll expect other recent musou titles to be on the same level, which sadly is not the case.
