Who doesn’t want to buy (and play) games they’ll actually enjoy?

There’s a lot of misinformation and outright shilling out there, and you can help push back by submitting thoughtful, objective reviews.

If you have a particular question that isn’t answered here, then message me on Discord @fioyl.

What are you looking for?

I want candid reviews from people who’ve played (and preferably beaten or mastered) a game.

Currently, I’m only accepting video game reviews. If you have a compelling argument for a different product, contact me and we can discuss it.

Compensation

I’m paying $50 USD per article.

Any payment will be contingent upon me accepting your review. Low quality or unhelpful reviews may be denied.

If you want to do an entire series or something that’s larger scope, message me and we can discuss it.

How will you pay me?

I have accounts on most payment platforms. I won’t do IOUs or gift cards.

What are the requirements?

You have to answer the following questions:

Describe the product/item/service

Give some background on the item for context. Is it part of a series? Is there any lore or knowledge required to enjoy it? Make sure to specify the platform you played on, if applicable. Give some background on the game.

What does it do well?

What were the high points? What’s memorable?

What could be better?

What parts were frustrating? What features needed polish? What stopped you from enjoying it?

Is it fun/entertaining/enjoyable?

Was it actually fun, or was it just something you did to kill time?

Is it good value?

This is self-explanatory. Is there a lot of DLC/extra content, and is any of that mandatory?

Who is this game for?

Specifically emphasize whether this game is for:

  • a broad audience (anyone)
  • fans of the genre (for example, shooters, jrpgs, platformers, etc)
  • a niche audience (fans of a certain franchise, fanservice games, etc)

Huge AAA games might be examples of titles with broad appeal. An RPG like Xenoblade Chronicles 3 might only be for people who are into the format. A spinoff/fanservice game like Super Robot Wars 30 may only appeal to mecha fans who also like SRPGs.

Overall, was it worth it?

Would you recommend this game? If you’re not entirely sure as to whether you’d recommend it, then say so, and justify your opinion. Would it be worth it at half price? Would you never wish this upon another person? Let your voice be heard.

How do I submit a review?

Save one of the forms below, complete it, and submit it. Don’t worry too much about grammar, punctuation, etc. If I see any issues then I’ll do some light editing.

Give me a heads-up when you submit so I can keep an eye out for your review, and please provide a working point of contact. If you don’t hear from me within a day or two of submission, check your discord settings, as I might not be able to message you. If you can’t answer a question, put N/A.

What about screenshots?

Not necessarily required, but helpful.

Review Submissions

Review Series:

Our reviews fall into two categories: “Was it Worth It?” and “Is [game] worth playing in 2023?” Here’s a quick breakdown:

“Was it Worth it?” series

Exactly what it sounds like. This category applies to recent releases.

“Is [game] worth playing in 2023?” series

This category is for games that may still relevant in the current cultural zeitgeist, and throwback titles that spike in popularity every so often. Ports, remasters, and collections fit snugly into this category.

Some exemplars are Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance or Deus Ex, which come back into vogue when their meme formats get traction.

Classic RPGs are another good example: Chrono Trigger gets invoked every time a game pays homage to it, like Sea of Stars. The Mother series (Earthbound) also gets frequently brought up every time a quirky RPG drops.
