You won’t be picking a character class today! Choose a species of dinosaur and try to survive in this prehistoric MMORPG. Was Path of Titans worth it?

Full disclosure: We received a review code for the Nintendo Switch version of this game. Rest assured that this will not affect the quality or candor of our review.

Background

Everyone has tried an MMORPG at some point, so you’re probably familiar with the basic concepts. You’ve probably even seen dinosaurs in some MMOs, whether it was as enemies or mounts. Path of Titans is a bit different in that there are no human characters or influences at all. You’re a dinosaur, and your objective is to survive, that’s it.

What dinosaurs are available:

Currently, there are 26 species available – Carnivores on the left, herbivores on the right. If you don’t purchase any of the DLC packages, then the species in bold are the only ones that will be available.

  • Alioramus
  • Allosaurus
  • Ceratosaurus
  • Concavenator
  • Deinonychus
  • Daspletosaurus
  • Latenivenatrix
  • Megalania
  • Metriacanthosaurus
  • Spinosaurus
  • Suchomimus
  • Sarcosuchus
  • Tyrannosaurus Rex
  • Albertaceratops
  • Amargasaurus
  • Anodontosaurus
  • Barsboldia
  • Camptosaurus
  • Deinocheirus
  • Eotriceratops
  • Iguanodon
  • Kentrosaurus
  • Lambeosaurus
  • Stegosaurus
  • Struthiomimus
  • Styracosaurus

What does Path of Titans do well?

The models look good. I’m not super into the paleo scene, so I couldn’t tell you how accurate they are, but there’s a healthy selection with some interesting inclusions. There’s a ton of customization and the dinos don’t ever look like some of the technicolor toy dinosaurs from Jurassic Park. Variants of species that are presumably more gracile or robust allow you to pick slightly faster or more defensive versions of an animal. There’s also a variety of skills to allow you to build and develop your character (dinosaur) as you grow.

What could Path of Titans do better?

My first thought while playing was “did the extinction already happen?” I don’t necessarily expect quest NPCs or bounty boards in a game about dinosaurs, but I’d like to see something happening.

Singleplayer is great…if you just want to be alone. I tested the roars/emotes a few times, but otherwise it was a quiet, lonely experience in the forest.

In multiplayer, I only saw other players around the starting area. I was expecting to really be the scourge of the Mesozoic, spawn-killing hapless NPC herbivores, but instead I found myself playing a reptile walking simulator. The closest thing to action was when I killed some small critters after flushing them from their den.

The quests are standard fare for the most part: deliver items, gather items, kill some small critters, find a location. This is all fine and well when you’re delivering iron ore or whatnot for the war effort in other games, but I legitimately felt stupid to be gathering acorns as a T-Rex.

Squirrels would later take over this ecological niche

Was Path of Titans fun?

After the initial thrill of playing as a dinosaur (or prehistoric reptile; my first character was a sarcosuchus after all) wears off, there’s not a lot going on here. The skeleton for a good game is here, but it still needs to be fleshed out.

Is Path of Titans good value?

The developers were kind enough to give out the founder’s edition with review codes, so I got to play with the full gamut of critters. There are quite a few dinosaurs included in the various editions, so keep that in mind if you’re looking for a particular species. It’s a high premium for this point in the game’s development, though.

Who is Path of Titans for?

Big dinosaur fans will appreciate this, especially if you can immerse yourself. Fans of traditional MMORPGs may find the experience lacking.

Was Path of Titans worth it?

This would have been the dream game for me as a child. However, it’s going to take some time before this ancient world really feels alive. As a curiosity, it’s fine, but I can’t condone spending money on Path of Titans until substantially more content is added. Right now, I’d recommend playing for free and upgrading to the other editions if you want to support the developer.
